Minister of Law and Human Rights Signs International Treaty

By Redaksi

Geneva, Lawyer.Kompasone.com - Minister of Law and Human Rights, Yasonna H. Laoly signed the International Treaty on Genetic Resources and Traditional Knowledge or World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Treaty on Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge (GRATK), in Geneva, Monday (08 /07/2024).

Yasonna said the signing of the WIPO Treaty on GRATK was Indonesia's strategic step to protect genetic resources and traditional knowledge. Indonesia will adopt the WIPO Treaty on GRATK and harmonize regulations in Indonesia through a revision of the Law on Patents later.

“Signing this treaty is a strategic step for Indonesia in protecting genetic resources and traditional knowledge. "Collaboration with WIPO will strengthen Indonesia's position in international eyes," said Yasonna.

He said the WIPO Treaty on GRATK helped Indonesia improve the effectiveness, transparency and quality of the patent system related to genetic resources and traditional knowledge. This treaty also prevents the erroneous granting of patents to inventions or innovations that do not meet the criteria.

"The WIPO Treaty on GRATK aims to prevent mistakenly granting patents to discoveries that are not new related to genetic resources and traditional knowledge," he said again.

Yasonna believes that the signing of the WIPO Treaty on GRATK will have a positive impact on the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, as well as Indonesian society at large.

The signing was carried out by Yasonna in a bilateral meeting with the Director General of WIPO, Daren Tang. Apart from signing the treaty, the bilateral meeting also discussed the development of the IP Academy in Indonesia and cooperation in increasing human resource capacity in the field of Intellectual Property.

Daren even mentioned that WIPO would send its staff to carry out on the job training (OJT) in Indonesia.

"Indonesia will be a pilot country where WIPO will send its staff to carry out on-the-job training in Indonesia," explained Darren.

For information, the Minister of Law and Human Rights together with the Indonesian delegation paid a working visit to Geneva, Switzerland to attend the 65th session of the WIPO General Assembly which was held from 9 to 17 July 2024.
